Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)
As one of the world’s leading research institutes in the field of tourism and its related disciplines the Tourism Department at the University of Otago is home to an array of leading, internationally recognised researchers and has an extensive and highly active PhD program that currently includes over thirty PhD students from across the globe. The Department has a successful record of securing scholarships for its PhD students, with 15 having been awarded scholarships from the University of Otago or the Commerce faculty in the last two years. These scholarship sources are open to both domestic and international students and cover all tuition costs and provide for living expenses.
As an integral part of the PhD process the Tourism Department at the University of Otago provides office space and a personal computer for all PhD students. In addition, financial support is provided to enable all PhD students to attend domestic and international conferences and to undertake fieldwork pertinent to their studies. Students are also encouraged to engage in tutorial and teaching opportunities (for which they are paid) where appropriate. All PhD students based in New Zealand during their candidature, irrespective of their nationality, are eligible to pay domestic level tuition fees of approximately NZ$4,264.00 per year (2009 fees).
Furthermore, international PhD students are eligible to work in paid employment for up to 20 hours per week during term time and full-time during summer vacation. Partners of all international postgraduate students are able to apply for an open work permit valid for the duration of the student's course of study. In addition, international PhD students with children should note that their children may attend school in New Zealand without paying international student fees.
The degree of Doctor of Philosophy is awarded on the basis of the submission of a thesis. The thesis should give evidence of the candidate's ability to carry out independent high quality research and provide a significant contribution to knowledge in the particular field. It is expected that some of the work in the thesis would be worthy of publication. The research should be of a kind which might reasonably be expected of a diligent and competent student after three years of full-time study.
Applicants applying to begin a PhD in 2010 must have submitted all the relevant material to the tourism department PhD coordinator by no later than the 28th of September 2010.
