Download an information sheet.

A four year undergraduate degree with a dissertation or case study. Students who excel during the first and second years of a BCom will be invited to consider this option.

The Honours programme in Management offers self-motivated students of above-average capability the opportunity to:

  • further develop skills of analysis, criticism and expression;
  • think constructively, and develop and defend their own points of view;
  • gain a full appreciation of their chosen discipline;
  • develop and use research skills.

Entry Requirements for Honours

Students are invited by the Head of Department into the Honours programme. Invitation and admission to the Honours programme normally occurs when entering year two, however it is possible to be invited in at year three or four.

Students must be enrolled in a BCom full-time; achieve and maintain a B+ average in 54 points of MANT 200-level papers and in 72 points in MANT 300-level.

Year two - At least 54 points of 200-level MANT papers, plus additional papers to a minimum of 126 points (students are encouraged to do at least 24 points of MANT 200-level).

Year three - MANT365 plus 72 further points of 300-level MANT, and additional papers worth at least 18 points.

Year four - MANT480 plus 72 points from MAN 401, 425, 426,429-432, 435-438, 445, 446 plus 36 further 400-level MANT points.

The Honours Dissertation - MANT 480

Every candidate for Honours has to prepare a dissertation (approximately 15,000 words).

The value of writing a dissertation is that it:

  • provides an opportunity to investigate, in some depth, areas of business activity in which the student is interested;
  • enables students to work closely with a member of staff on a topic of interest;
  • allows experience of carrying out research of a more advanced level;
  • provides a substantial achievement in terms of work which can be shown to prospective employers;
  • may be used as preparation for a MCom or PhD proposal.

The dissertation is submitted by 29 October and students graduate with a BCom(Hons):

First Class 80% and over
Second Class, Division 1 73 - 79%
Second Class, Division 2 65 - 72%
Third Class 50 - 64%

Diploma for Graduates - DipGrad

A one year full-time course, or part-time over more than one year, structured to meet the student's needs. The regulations require 120 points if which at least 72 must be at 300-level or above. Students are exempt from studying BSNS105 and MANT102. For an endorsed qualification 54 points or more at 300-level or above must be in the major e.g. DipGrad (Management).

The Diploma for Graduates is an academically integrated course of study, designed for graduates and others with equivalent qualifications, who require additional training or training in another discipline. It is often taken by BA, BSc or BPhEd students, wishing to add to their marketability. The course of study may be taken in any subject or combination of subjects, taking into account prior experiences and qualifications.

The DipGrad is also an option for BCom Management students who still have to complete 18 to 36 points for their degree. By taking a further 120 points they will graduate BCom, DipGrad.

Outstanding DipGrad students who do at least 72 points at 300-level with B+ average can go on to PGDipCom and then MBus or MCom if they wish. However these students must take MANT365.

Entry requirements

Admission to the course is subject to the approval of the Senate. Every candidate for the Diploma shall:

  • have been admitted to a degree or a diploma of a University in New Zealand; or
  • have submitted evidence satisfactory to the Senate of previous training and experience appropriate to the planned course of study.

The DipGrad Course Director is Dr Willem Labuschagne, Department of Computer Science. All potential DipGrad students need Dr Labuschagne's approval as well as the Head of Department of Management.

Fourth Year Administration

Grades

The award of final marks is by a committee of fourth year examiners. Any grades suggested by the teacher or supervisor are subject to change - both up and down. This process looks across an individual's record and also across the average marks for particular papers. There is always a second examiner for dissertations and projects. Ten percent of dissertations and projects will be subject to moderation for the purposes of quality control, after the event (marks will not be affected).

MANT480 Expectations

MANT480 (BCom(Hons)) is a theoretical dissertation and may take the following formats.

a) A student may undertake a 'library-based' survey which critiques the literature on a topic, and makes a contribution to theory. We would expect the student to thoroughly investigate the literature on a topic after negotiating the research methodology and reporting format with their supervisor. An example may be that a student undertakes a study like "Significant determinants of employee loyalty". The focus of the dissertation is the development of theory. This is a high risk option.

b) Empirical research not conducted in any specific organisation.

A student may be undertaking a study like "An empirical investigation of employee loyalty in the New Zealand Health Sector". We would expect the student to perhaps survey a wide variety of people involved in Health provision and to draw conclusions from that data. The focus of the dissertation is the primary research, supported by the literature review. While the dissertation may prove useful to a wide variety of users in the Health industry, no particular provider would have commissioned it. As before, we would expect the student to negotiate the methodology and reporting format with their supervisor.

c) Empirical research conducted in an organisation.

A student may be undertaking a study like "An empirical investigation of employee loyalty at Dunedin Hospital". We would expect the student to develop an appropriate methodology for gathering the data and writing a dissertation acceptable at senior management level for the sponsoring organisation. Again, we would expect the student to negotiate the methodology and reporting format with their supervisor. As with b), the focus of the dissertation is primary research, supported by the literature review.
