PapersThe Management Department offers a wide variety of papers covering a number of management topics and issues. Please select from the links below for further information on the paper(s) of your choice. Many of our courses will use the University's Blackboard web pages. COURSE CHANGES IN 2012!100-level coursesThe aim of 100-level courses is to provide an introduction to the theory and practice of management, the functions of management, the New Zealand business environment, and to prepare students for advanced courses. The 100-level papers are:
Offered every semester to introduce students to the evolution of organisation and management theory, providing an insight to the connection between theory and practice. Develops understanding of individual and group behaviour, communications, and the management of operations and human resources within organisations. Offered for the last time in Summer School 2012 to provide an introduction to each of the areas of management taught in the Department. Building upon BSNS 105, students are offered a more in-depth representation of the range of activities in which managers engage, in an effort to survive in their business environments. Current Management students starting their 200 level papers in 2012 should not take MANT 250 or 251 if they have previously taken MANT 213, 214 and 215. *MANT 250 Managing People (18 points, S2) *MANT 251 Managing Organisations (18 points, S2) Core PapersA BCom includes the following Required Papers:
You are not required to complete all of the 100-level required papers in your first year. To complete a BCom you need to pass papers worth a minimum of 360 points. At least 180 of those points must be above 100-level with a minimum of 72 points at 300-level. You may choose to do non-Commerce papers with a maximum of 90 points able to be credited towards your BCom.
200-level coursesAt this level students are able to select subjects that are in line with their interest areas, or area of management specialisation. Subject streams offered at this level include topics such as organisation strategy and behaviour, operations management, industrial relations, human resource management, and international management. Important skills for managers are also covered in subjects such as communication skills, and interpersonal and intercultural communication. The 200-level papers are:
*See the changes in Management courses starting 2012. 300-level coursesAt the third year level courses take a greater strategic focus. Broader managerial issues are considered, in context with business and macro environmental changes. These subjects include managing innovation and growth, business ethics, strategic management, management in Asian and Chinese business culture, international industrial relations, labour negotiations and dispute resolution, and employee rights and responsibilities. A Research Methods paper is also offered at the 300-level for students interested in continuing studies to 400-level and postgraduate qualifications. The 300-level papers available in 2012 are:
400-Level Courses400-level Management papers are taken by BCom(Honours) and MBus students, and provide advanced study in important Management areas. Normally a pass will be required in the corresponding paper at 300-level (if it exists) and evidence of ability to succeed at 400-level. This evidence is an average pass at B+ or better in 24 points at MANT 300-level. The 400-level papers available in 2011 are:
