Dr
Malcolm Cone
BA PhD PGDipArts(Otago) MNZAC
Senior Lecturer
Malcolm teaches and researches international management and comparative
approaches to management and business in the Asia Pacific. He worked in
business in New Zealand for a number of years before coming to tertiary
education. Since then he has worked in a number of countries in the Asia
Pacific as a consultant in cross-cultural communication, and a researcher
into the effects of culture on organisational behaviour. He has published
studies on cross-cultural dilemmas faced by European firms in joint ventures
in China, business ethics in Islamic business practice, knowledge distribution
networks in Chinese organisations and the limitations of new-classical
economic analysis in developing non-western environments. His current
research interests are the modernisation and development in the Asia Pacific,
particularly China, and the effects of economic change on self-description
and motivation in non-western cultures in the Asia Pacific. As part of
his research in China, Malcolm has produced the first of a trilogy of
films on network capitalism in rural China called Releasing the Dragon.
He is the Director of the Asia Institute,
which aims to establish a better understanding of the Asian
business environment and what it means to compete in North East Asia.
