Dr Ian McAndrew teaches in the areas of labour and employment relations, and negotiation, mediation, and advocacy skills. Ian practiced in the labour relations field in the United States for 15 years before moving to New Zealand. He was an adjudicator and mediator with the New Zealand Employment Tribunal from 1993 until 2002, and served for a time as Chief of the Tribunal. His current research focuses on collective bargaining and workplace partnership, and arbitral and judicial decisions and decision making. He is the Director of New Zealand Mediators Ltd, a private agency delivering mediation, adjudication, and dispute resolution services. In recent years, he has provided training or coaching in negotiation, mediation and collective bargaining to a wide range of student and practitioner audiences, including the Mediation Service of the Department of Labour and the Members of the Employment Relations Authority. He has been a member of the Legal Aid Review Panel, a statutory body charged with reviewing decisions of the Legal Services Agency, regarding applications for legal aid, and in 2008 was appointed to the Lawyers and Conveyancers Disciplinary Tribunal and the Panel of Mediators of the Arbitrators & Mediators Institute of New Zealand (AMINZ). He has also been appointed by Government as a Member of the International Education Appeals Authority. The IEAA investigates and adjudicates on complaints filed by international students under the Code of Practice for the Pastoral Care of International Students. In 2008, Ian was the recipient of both an Otago University Teaching Excellence Award as one of three outstanding teachers on campus, and a National Tertiary Teaching Excellence Award as one of ten outstanding tertiary teachers in New Zealand,
worth $20,000 and presented by the Tertiary Education Minister.
A recent article by Alan Geare, Fiona Edgar and Ian - "Workplace Values and Beliefs: An Empirical Study of Ideology, High Commitment Management and Unionization” published in The International Journal of Human Resource Management volume 20 issue 5, has been selected as one of the 50 best articles out of 15,000 published in 2009 in the top 400 business and management journals and has therefore won an Emerald Management Reviews Citation of Excellence.
Teaching Interests
Dr McAndrew teaches negotiation, mediation and dispute resolution; and labour and employment relations. Ian teaches at the undergraduate, honours, postgraduate and executive education levels at Otago University, and also teaches regularly in Europe.

Research Interests
Dr McAndrew's research interests lie in the areas of labour and employment relations, especially collective bargaining and workplace partnership, and the mediation and adjudication of employment and industrial disputes.
Ian has an active research collaboration with Management Department colleagues Alan Geare and Fiona Edgar, and a network of overseas collaborators, that ranges across human resources and industrial relations practices, workplace partnership, and managerial values and ideologies.
In addition, Ian’s long-standing project on employment arbitration decisions, centred in the database of some 12,000 Employment Tribunal decisions issued 1991 – 2003 has now been expanded to an international comparative study in collaboration with Professors Michael Gurdon of the University of Vermont and Martin Risak of the University of Vienna.
