Professor
Colin researches strategy and strategic management. Over the last two decades, he has given particular attention to the strategic challenges facing New Zealand business since the reforms of the mid-1980s opened the economy to the full force of globalisation. He has published several monographs and a book on the strategies firms have adopted in response to the new competitive environment. Since 1998 he has led a large multi-disciplinary research team, Competitive Advantage New Zealand, (CANZ). This is funded by the Foundation for Research Science and Technology (FRST), and is devoted to understanding what is involved in growing world-class businesses from a New Zealand base. His work has been published in a range of journals including the Journal of International Marketing, Journal of Operations Management, R&D Management, Human Relations and Strategic Management Journal. He is a regular reviewer for a number of journals including the Journal of Management Studies, and the British Journal of Management.
Colin's paper with Sylvie Chetty “A Strategic Approach to Internationalization: A Traditional Versus a ‘Born-Global’ Approach” published in 2004 in the Journal of International Marketing was selected as winner of the 2009 Hans B. Thorelli Award offered by the American Marketing Association.
The Hans B. Thorelli award is given each year to the article published in the Journal of International Marketing (5 years plus) that has made the most significant and long-term contribution to international marketing theory or practice.
