The objectives of this research are to improve the ability of New Zealand firms to build competitive advantage from their distinctive regional location; and to improve the ability of regional communities to enhance the competitiveness and growth of local businesses.

The research is identifying the distinctive historical, cultural and economic conditions that contribute to the competitive advantage of local firms. A study of the Dunedin region has been completed that examined the city’s engineering, fashion and biotech industries, as well as the distinctive infrastructure of political, transport and educational resources that support these industries. A replication study of a larger region commences in the latter half of 2006.
