Rob Lawson joined the Department in 1987, and was appointed Professor in 1995. He completed his first degree in geography at the University of Manchester and subsequently completed an MSc in Agricultural Marketing at the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne and a PhD at the University of Sheffield.
Rob's special area of expertise is in the study of consumer behaviour, though he also has interests in the development of marketing theory. Within consumer behaviour his research has been concentrated into two broad areas: tourist behaviour, and the values and lifestyles of NZ consumers.
In the latter area he is co-leader with Sarah Todd of the New Zealand consumer lifestyles project and Rob has been involved with four out of the five major surveys since the project was first run in 1979. The latest data was collected at the end of 2005 . Other recent and current projects have involved work on fruit and vegetable consumption, levels of physical activity and the growth and development of farmers' markets.
Although he delivers lectures on particular undergraduate courses, most of Rob’s teaching has been at the 400-level where he has responsibility for Marketing Theory (MART 431) with Ben Wooliscroft and Consumer Behaviour (MART 435) with Sanna Ganglmair-Wooliscroft and Maree Thyne. Rob is also heavily involved in postgraduate, especially PhD, supervision.
Rob stepped down from the role as Head of Department at the end of 2004, and held a partial role as Research Dean for the School of Business. He is also the immediate past President of ANZMAC and the New Zealand representative on the EMAC executive. Other external appointments include the role of an assessor on the business panel for the Performance Based Research Fund.
