About Us
The Department of Marketing first began life in 1966. Since then it has steadily grown to become one of the larger marketing departments in the world, offering a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses, which all benefit from the research-led approach adopted by the University as a whole. With approximately 30 academic staff, the department has a rich tradition of topical and diverse research, informing both industry and the many students we graduate into the best marketing jobs each year.
Our own research tells us that students enjoy our courses because they are practical, broad-based, and realistic. There are lots of opportunities to work with others, research independently, and to learn how to present work professionally.
Employers say they favour our students because we teach much more than just mainstream marketing. We also teach communication, project and group management, and we emphasise the importance of creativity, initiative, and decision-making. All these things make our graduates more attractive to employers.
We believe marketing is popular because we respond to our students’ needs and we understand the demands of industry and society. A large part of marketing is about understanding people and their behaviour, so it’s no surprise that we place a great deal of importance on the way we treat you.
We do hope that you want to know more about marketing, and that you want to know more about studying marketing at the University of Otago.
