Car/PE is one of the projects of the Human Computer Interaction group in our multimedia research laboratory. The group works with many aspects of
human computer interaction from innovation and optimisation of interfaces to augmented reality where realtime computer generated graphics
are overlaid on headset video. In the latter the orientation and position of virtual objects is based on the recognition of a symbol in the environment. For example a simple cross and dot on a piece of card can
translate to a 3D animated object or even a tool that could be used in turn to
manipulate the virtual environment.
Car/PE's goal is to make remote communication and collaboration more efficient and enjoyable by
simulating and enriching face-to-face meetings with virtual and augmented reality technologies.
The current model is intended to run on a reasonably enhanced but still everyday PC. The artifical environment allows people to appear as individuals in a 3D world they can interact with. It incorporates
3D sound, documents, media, and real time 3d models that can be moved around, changed, and examined from
all angles including from the inside.
