In 2006 the Department’s research output was assessed as part of the Performance Based Research Fund (PBRF). The PBRF assigns a research quality score to academic units. The Department's score of 6.1 makes it the best economics department in New Zealand. The University of Otago’s overall score is 4.22.

The research interests of staff include the fields of economic growth and development, macroeconomics, econometrics, international economics, economics of sport, health economics, labour economics, monetary economics, public economics, productivity analysis, CGE modelling urban economics, natural resource economics and experimental economics.
