"How can social media be best employed by business to improve the ways in which they communicate with their communities of consumers and employees."
Andrew is a Lecturer for the Department of Information Science, University of Otago, where he teaches first-year students about information systems and business, Web 2.0, and social media. He is a member of the steering group for the University's Internet Research Group Otago (IRGO) with related research interests that includes: social media, microblogging (particularly Twitter); online communities and social networks; narrative theory; and folksonomies. He keeps busy with research about emergent self-narratives in micro-communication spaces.
Business and the internet:
"The internet has had a profound impact on 20th century business models so I’m curious about how businesses respond and adapt to these challenges. For example, the music industry struggling with the digital world is one area of particular interest."
The advent of social media:
"Social media has meant that everyone can participate on the internet. This means that a huge amount of information is being produced and consumed by a global user-base at ever increasing rates. I am interested in trying to structure and make sense of this “life-stream” information through the use of narrative theory."
